Responding to the Needs of the Times

Moving always toward profound love of God and love of neighbor without distinction brought the first Sisters of St Joseph to St. Paul in November 1851. In 1853, because of the cholera epidemic, an infectious and often fatal disease, the Sisters closed the school they had just started, sent the children home, and took in those who were sick until St Joseph’s Hospital could be built.

This past week has sure put the phrase “responding to the needs of the times” to the test! All of us on the Ministries Foundation staff, Board of Directors and various committees have been working hard to adjust, adapt, and continue our mission during this coronavirus pandemic.

First and foremost is the safety of our staff, volunteers, and those we serve. It is our goal to behave in a way that is responsible, cooperative with public health efforts, and most of all, based in consideration for the well-being, health and safety of all before other concerns. To this end:

  • The Sisters have closed all provincial buildings until further notice.
  • All group and/or committee meetings have been canceled during this time.
  • Employees are working remotely and are accessible, including responding to emails and calls per usual.

The Sisters are monitoring this situation weekly, and anticipate that circumstances will change. We will keep you informed.

Much of our energy has been applied to our 2020 Carondelet Gala, which for more than a year has been scheduled for May 8. Because it falls within the 8 week recommendation from the CDC for limiting gatherings and events, we are re-evaluating next steps with our Board, staff, and Steering Committee. Staging an event that highlights and showcases the ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph takes energy and passion. Their mission to provide health care for those without insurance, education for those learning a new way of life, advocate for social justice, and safety for those who need hope and healing is relevant now more than ever. The need has not changed, but the ways we support it might. We anticipate having an update by the end of the week, and will share that with you and on our website.

Thank you for your understanding and lasting support of our work, the Sisters, and the ministries. We are stronger together and pray for your well-being and the well-being of the world.
