Shelter

Arriving in Minnesota scarred in mind and body, with nothing but the clothes on her back, Miriam was a victim of torture. She knew nobody, spoke no English, had no money, and could easily have slid into a life of homelessness and despair. Instead an agency referred her to Sarah’s…An Oasis for Women, where she found a home with 26 other women who had found healing and peace there. She learned the skills she needed in her new country, went to school and began working to make a life for herself. Now she looks forward to making a new home in America for the family she left behind.

The Sisters of St. Joseph are turning the heartbreaking stories of tortured and broken women from this country and around the world into a wellspring of hope and healing at Sarah’s…An Oasis for Women. More than 400 tortured and abused women have found refuge at Sarah’s. All of them eventually transition to permanent housing, and nearly 90 percent have found employment. Perhaps the most powerful gift they receive is a sense of self sufficiency and worth that can be passed along to others. Says one former resident “I would like to create a place like Sarah’s in my own country.”
