Joanne Emmer, CSJ: A Retrospective
2008
Joanne Emmer, CSJ: A Retrospective includes numerous works in the artist’s favored style, acrylic wash on canvas. Among these are Emmer’s “Earth Series,” the artist’s perspective on Minneapolis-St. Paul neighborhoods. 20 of these original works are for sale to benefit the Sisters of St. Joseph network of programs that bring help and hope to people in need.
The 21 Earth Series paintings celebrate the trails and backyards of our treasured Twin Cities. The artist’s medium — acrylic wash on unprimed canvas — is a tricky wet-on-wet painting technique executed on a level surface rather than an easel. The artist hovers over the saturated canvas, then applies one diluted color and controls it with sponges until it begins to set. When dry, this first color will remain permanent; however, it will be modified and enhanced with each subsequent application until it can be pronounced “good.”
